Four Super Smoothies!

I have always loved making smoothies, and was recently gifted a ‘NutriBullet’ as a birthday present! Best birthday present ever! Smoothies are quick to make, filling, and if you add the right ingredients, – nutritious too! (Just FYI, I classify chocolate as a very nutritious ingredient!). And what’s more, they even look pretty!

The last couple months, I have over indulged in the holiday season with multiple turkey dinners and sweet treats galore! So this past week, I tried to get back on track, by making smoothies for either breakfast or lunch. Here for you are some of my favorite ‘go-to’ smoothies.

Triple Berry Smoothie

  • Servings: 1-2
  • Time: 5 mins
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Print

A fresh, light, berry smoothie rich in anti-oxidants perfect for a summer afternoon drink. I love the deep rich color it has, and an abundance of fruity flavor. It is dairy-free and gluten-free.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh strawberries
  • 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
  • 3/4 cup frozen raspberries
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • kiwi and mint for garnish (optional)

Directions

  1. In the jug of your NutriBullet or blender add all your berries.
  2. If using the NutriBullet, fill to the max line with orange juice.
  3. Blend completely and serve with a garnish of fresh green kiwi.

You may use fresh or frozen berries. I typically use what I have on hand at that time. Occasionally the berries may be tart, in which case you can add your sweetener of choice. I did not add any sweetener in this smoothie, and it was perfect.

Another one of my favorites is the ‘Pineapple Coconut Smoothie‘. It has that ‘tropical paradise’ feel to it and serve it up in a pineapple cup – and it’s holiday mode!

Pineapple Coconut Smoothie

  • Servings: 1-2
  • Time: 10 mins
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Print

A refreshing combination of pineapple and coconut served in a pineapple cup for that added 'vacation' feel .

Ingredients

  • 1 fresh pineapple cored, skin removed and cut into chunks. Alternatively you could use canned pineapple chunks or a combination of both.
  • 3/4 cup cold coconut water
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1-2 Tbsp sweetened shredded coconut
  • A pineapple cup and cherry (optional) for serving

Directions

  1. In your NutriBullet or blender combine the pineapple chunks, frozen bananas and sweetened shredded coconut.
  2. Add your coconut water to the max line if using your NutriBullet, or approximately 3/4 cup.
  3. Blend together till smooth.

I typically use frozen well-ripe bananas as it adds a level of sweetness and creaminess to the smoothies. If you do not have time to cut and freeze, you can use fresh bananas. I’ve classified this as ‘medium’ difficulty if you will cut and core a fresh pineapple and make a pineapple cup to serve.

Here is another alternate way of serving up this deliciousness. The pineapple cup looks very cute, but it does require a little bit of an arm workout. But this smoothie looks equally gorgeous served up in a goblet with a simple garnish of a red cherry and a small Hawaiian umbrella.

‘Banana Berry Smoothie’ was my mid-week selection. It is very filling and equally nutritious. The oatmeal adds a nutty flavor to the smoothie, and the blueberries gives it the wonderful purple burst of color and flavor.

Banana Berry Smoothie

  • Servings: 2
  • Time: 5 mins
  • Difficulty: Easy

A thick, creamy, packed with nutrition, almost-can-be-eaten-with-a-spoon smoothie.

Ingredients

  • 1 Frozen Banana
  • 1 1/2 cup of fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 2 Tbsp of old fashioned oatmeal
  • handful of fresh baby spinach
  • 1 Tbsp of flax seeds (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp of yogurt (greek or probiotic)
  • Milk (dairy of choice- almond or skim milk)
  • Sweetener of choice optional (honey or sugar)

Directions

  1. In your NutriBullet or blender, add all the ingredients except milk.
  2. Add milk according to the consistency you desire. I prefer a thicker smoothie, so I add just enough to blend.
  3. Blend until smooth and serve immediately with some fresh blueberries.

Like all smoothies, this is very versatile. I have on occasion added more spinach, and on occasion just a few leaves. You can also play around with the oatmeal quantity to see how dense you like it. I did not add any sweetener in this smoothie, because the well-ripe frozen bananas did the trick.

And last but not least my all-time favorite ‘Chocolate Banana Smoothie’. Remember how I mentioned, I thought chocolate is a nutritious ingredient.

Chocolate Banana Smoothie

  • Servings: 1-2
  • Time: 10 mins
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Print

Heavenly chocolate goodness in a jar.

Ingredients

  • 1 banana cut up and frozen
  • 2-3 heaped Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 Tbsp yogurt (greek or probiotic)
  • Milk to blend (almond or skim milk)
  • 1 Tbsp of good quality organic peanut butter
  • 1 tsp of instant coffee. It helps bring out the chocolate flavor
  • 2 Tbsp dark 60% good quality chocolate chips (Star Ingredient! I use Ghiradhelli)

Directions

  1. In your NutriBullet or blender, combine bananas, cocoa powder, peanut butter, coffee, and yogurt.
  2. Add enough milk to blend together.
  3. Serve and enjoy with few chocolate chips for garnish.

Loved your berries recipe, will have to try it soon😬.
My smoothie recipe is basically 1 frozen banana, 1/2 hass avocado, 6 almonds or 1/2 cup almond milk, 1/2 cup cold water ( you can add later depending on the consistency you like), 1/4 cup fresh blueberries, 1tsp of chia seeds, 1tsp organic honey( optional). Then I top it with some walnuts and sunflower seeds. Yummy! Try it.
