She glanced at the piano from the corner of her eye. It had remained in that secluded corner for many years. Neglected, untouched, yet meaningful to her.
Sara had started playing at the tender age of 8. By the time she turned 12, music flowed from her insides. She was not only playing pieces, she was playing a piece of herself. Completely mesmerized by the ivory and black keys and the magic within. This was her safe place.
But for the last 20 years, she was unable to part with it, for it reminded her of the time she didn’t say no like she was taught to say. For the time she didn’t stand up because she was scared. For the time she didn’t fight back. For the time her mentor took advantage of her while she played her favorite piece.
Tears welled up in her eyes. She was brave. One day she would sit back on that stool. Forgive herself. She would play her favorite piece and make it her safe place again.
